I also have "project notes" in the Inspector that show up as I work on each scene so that I remember little facts or subplots I want to keep track of.
From here I can go right to a scene that needs to be revised or added to. Then, when I go up to the top tool bar and click on the "outline" view mode, I can see at a glance for each scene: the title and summary, status, word count goal and total word count.
In the "general" tab of the Inspector I have each scene's status marked (first draft, revised draft, needs edit, etc) and at the bottom bar of the screen I have set a word count goal for each scene (the little target.) When I hit the "show index card" button at the top, I can see all my scenes on a corkboard (and print them out as index cards if I want to) This makes is easy to rearrange them if i need to. In the Inspector (right hand column) I have a name for each scene, and a summary. That way I can tell at a glance that I have a good balance of each character. My novel has 2 POV characters so the little icon on the binder (the left hand column with folders etc) is pink for 1 character and blue for the other. It takes some time to learn (beyond just the initial stuff which is kind of intuitive) but it is so worth it. There are also online classes where you can learn the basics and beyond the basics. I don't use the corkboard function, or project keywords, or color labels, among many. They have a bunch of other functions that I haven't used to the best of their capabilities, but I'm sure other people have found uses for them. The compile function allows you to change the font instantly. Agent doesn't like a Courier font? No need to individually click each chapter to reformat. It took me a while to understand the specifics, but the customization it gives you is so worth it. They don't sort by number or alphabetical order as Windows Explorer/Google Drive does.Ĭompiling on Scrivener has been a godsend. Your files are organized the way you want them, and you can use a short sentence to summarize your chapters/scenes to make finding them easier. You can move scenes from one chapter to another! You can move a chapter to somewhere further up if you think it fits there! No need to constantly rename your file names when you do it. I don't have to constantly open documents searching for the right chapter to revise.ĮDIT: I forgot about this: I cannot praise their drag-and-drop function enough. If I change a plot point in (for example) Ch20, which messes up the flow in Ch10, I can just click on Ch10 and start revising from there. I can hop around clicking on different chapters as I revise them. I love that I can have a big picture view of my manuscript all the time. The split window format is also amazing for putting your research side by side your manuscript, so you can constantly refer to it as well. I have multiple query and synopsis revisions for my project put in a single folder, and they have a split window format so I can constantly refer to my manuscript/past revisions as I'm writing it. I can stuff everything about my project in there without having to open 15 different windows to find what I need - research clips, character notes, pictures, thought dumps, your trash won't ever get deleted and I've been saved by that function multiple times. I bought it when it was on sale for $20, and I can say it's so worth it.
